On the occasion of the landmark visit by the United Nations Security Council to Mogadishu, Hon. Yussur Abrar, former Governor of the Central Bank of Somalia, participated in a luncheon discussion on the opportunities and challenges for economic development in Somalia hosted by the Global Center.
Hon. Abrar offered her perspective on the current economic situation in Somalia, stressing the importance of security in underpinning economic growth. She offered insights into the challenges and opportunities for establishing a transparent financial management system, improving accountability, and strengthening the capacity of the national financial institutions.
Following her formal remarks, Hon. Abrar participated in an engaging and multifaceted dialogue with attendees from UN Permanent Missions, UN agencies, academics, and civil society. Discussion focused on the relationship between state and federal governments, the importance of a credible resource sharing agreement, challenges to reviving the Somali shilling, and the role of the international community in promoting transparency and good governance in Somalia.
