Too often since 9/11, states have used concerns about terrorism as an excuse to crack down on rights – undermining hard-won democratic freedoms, muzzling the media, and cracking down on non-violent protesters and civil society leaders from Nigeria to Hong Kong.
The Global Center advances a different vision of counterterrorism that puts human rights front and center. But we can’t do it alone.
Through grassroots initiatives, institutional training, and direct financial assistance, the Global Center strengthens the ability of local leaders and civil society organizations to build resilience against violent extremism. Together, we reform institutions, mobilize communities, and shape domestic and international security policies to prioritize human rights.
