The Global Center organized a virtual expert focus group on furthering cooperation between government and civil society in the prison rehabilitation and reintegration efforts of violent extremist offenders. The focus group involved a total of 47 practitioners from both government (prisons, probation, and police) and civil society (including non-government organizations and local voluntary groups) from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. The focus group discussed regional opportunities and challenges of advancing cooperation between government and civil society at different stages of the rehabilitation and reintegration process. The results of the discussion enabled regional experts to situate the current levels of cooperation, to inform future regional exchanges of lessons learned and good practice between government and civil society practitioners in support of the rehabilitation and reintegration of violent extremist prisoners.

The discussion from this expert focus group contributed to a policy brief on how government and civil society can advance their cooperation in the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals convicted and imprisoned for violent extremism or terrorism-related offenses.
