This conference was co-organized by CGCC and the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Task Force’s Working Group on Countering the Use of the Internet for Terrorist Purposes and hosted by Naif Arab University for Security Science. The conference brought together more than 120 policymakers, experts, and practitioners drawn from national governments, international organizations, civil society, the private sector, and academia who have experience or policy interest in designing and disseminating counternarratives on the Internet.
Just as the Internet may influence people toward violent behavior, so too can it promote a counter to the extremist narrative. To this end, experts shared their analyses of the problems and opportunities presented by the Internet and other media in building and delivering effective counternarratives, with a view to developing national and international initiatives that can challenge the claims of legitimacy, relevance, and credibility by extremist groups.
