The Global Center, together with local Indonesian facilitators, implemented two frontline training workshops for Indonesian prison staff, in cooperation with the Indonesian Directorate General of Corrections. The training follows the Train-the-Trainer (ToT) workshop held in March 2019, which trained a cadre of local facilitators to deliver training for prison staff on the management of violent extremist offenders (VEOs) in maximum security facilities in Indonesia. Over a two week period, this cadre of local trainers delivered the course with support from Global Center, targeting a total of 48 frontline prison staff responsible for the management of VEOs on Nusakambangan Island. These trainings conclude the second phase of the program, which will be followed by a mainstreaming process to build upon the ToT program, and further embed the training program into the Indonesian prison service.

This training workshop is part of the Global Center’s overall Countering Violent Extremism in Prisons (CVE-P) program, which provides training and technical assistance to prison services on preventing and countering violent extremism. The project was established in partnership with the Global Counterterrorism Forum. The program is funded by the governments of Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Netherlands, Norway, and New Zealand.
