The Global Center hosted a luncheon to further explain the evolution of the organization and highlight its work and partnerships in counterterrorism and countering violent extremism (CVE). The Honorable Rand Beers provided keynote remarks and spoke about U.S. counterterrorism and CVE efforts both domestically and abroad. The discussion also featured an expert panel with Richard Barrett, a member of the Global Center’s Advisory Council and former Director of Global Counter Terrorism Operations for the UK Government’s intelligence, who conveyed the current threat of terrorism and its impact. Anton du Plessis of the Institute for Security Studies emphasized the present global shift from counterterrorism efforts toward safety and security efforts, and Naureen Chowdhury Fink of the Global Center discussed the organization’s current efforts in the area of CVE and de-radicalization. All participants communicated the need for stronger cooperation between governments, international and regional organizations, and nongovernmental actors, such as civil society groups and survivors of terrorist violence, to advance comprehensive, multilateral approaches to prevent and counter terrorism while promoting and protecting human rights and the rule of law.
