The Global Center hosted a training on the processes and procedures for frozen asset management and seizure. Mr. John Chevis, Director of Contra$celus Pty Ltd, and Mr. Gavin Durbin, Chief Executive Officer at AML Solutions International, served as co-facilitators and orchestrated a participatory and engaging environment. Over the course of the three day training, participants discussed the processes for collecting intelligence and evidence, special investigation techniques, and pre- and post-seizure functions. Trainers also discussed the importance of national and regional cooperation in asset management and recovery, as well as international cooperation around mutual legal assistance.
The training included 34 participants from the Ethiopian Financial Intelligence Center (FIC), Ethiopian Revenues and Customs Authority, Federal Police Commission, Ministry of Justice, National Bank of Ethiopia, Charities and Societies Agency, Federal Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ato Gemechu Weyuma Lulesa, Director General of the FIC, delivered opening remarks and stressed the importance of effective asset freezing frameworks for Ethiopia’s capacity to counter money laundering and terrorist financing.
The training was a component of a broader technical assistance and capacity-building program supported by the Government of Denmark entitled “Strengthening Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Capacities in Ethiopia.”
