The Global Center and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development Security Sector Programme (IGAD SSP) hosted a two day workshop titled, Strengthening Regional Capacities to Prevent and Counter Violent Extremism in the Greater Horn of Africa.

The workshop brought together over 60 stakeholders engaged in preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) in the Greater Horn of Africa, including representatives from national governments, civil society organizations, academia, the African Union, European Union, United Nations, and other regional and international actors. The workshop was supported by the United States Department of State and facilitated by Dr. Simon Nyambura, Counter-Terrorism Pillar Head, IGAD SSP, and Mr. Alistair Millar, Executive Director, Global Center.

Discussion opened with a survey of the drivers and enabling conditions for violent extremism within the Greater Horn of Africa context, as well as ongoing initiatives to build community resilience and strengthen partnerships between government and civil society actors on P/CVE programming. The workshop also included a highly engaged and participatory discussion of national and regional P/CVE priorities and opportunities for engagement, including areas of regional collaboration through the recently announced Horn and Eastern Africa Countering Violent Extremism Center of Excellence and Counter-Messaging Hub. Participants provided concrete suggestions to inform the development of the Horn and Eastern Africa Countering Violent Extremism Center and ensure it serves as a representative and effective coordination mechanism for P/CVE in the region.
