Women and girls have played key roles as ideologues, facilitators, fundraisers, and recruiters for violent extremist groups. The international community increasingly recognizes that failure to account for the agency and motivations of women in supporting violent extremism can result in ineffectual responses. To help address this gap in the quantitative research on preventing and countering violent extremism, the Global Center, with support from UN Women, is undertaking a research project to analyze trends in motivation, circumstances, and trajectories of women and girls between the ages of 13 and 30, engaged in, or at risk of, radicalization to violent extremism.
